Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. This one-day workshop aims to bridge the gap between UDL principles and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Participants will explore how AI tools and strategies can be utilized to create more inclusive, accessible, and effective learning environments, aligning with the UDL framework to accommodate learner variability.

Learning Intentions:
Foundational Understanding of UDL and AI: To solidify participants' understanding of the UDL framework and the basics of AI in education, establishing a common ground for exploration and discussion.
Strategies for AI-Enhanced UDL Implementation: To identify and develop strategies for leveraging AI technologies to support the three primary principles of UDL: Engagement, Representation, and Action & Expression.
Practical AI Tools for Inclusive Education: To introduce and demonstrate practical AI tools and resources that can assist in creating more personalized and accessible learning experiences for students.
Design Thinking for AI-UDL Integration: To apply design thinking processes in planning and creating learning activities that integrate AI to support UDL principles effectively.

Success Criteria
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Connect UDL and AI: Describe how AI technologies can support and enhance the implementation of the UDL framework in educational settings.
  • Identify AI Tools and Strategies: List and explain various AI tools and strategies that can be employed to support differentiated instruction, accessibility, and engagement aligned with UDL principles.
  • Craft AI-Enhanced Learning Activities: Demonstrate the ability to design and plan learning activities or lessons that incorporate AI tools to support UDL's three primary principles, catering to diverse learner needs.
  • Reflect on AI-UDL Integration Challenges: Identify potential challenges and ethical considerations in integrating AI within the UDL framework and propose strategies to address these concerns.
